Immerse yourself in the art of plein-air and alla prima painting in this dynamic, hands-on workshop designed for both beginners and experienced artists. Spend a full day exploring the fundamentals of painting outdoors and capturing spontaneous moments with a focus on key techniques and principles.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Setup & Site Selection: How to choose and prepare your outdoor painting site for optimal results.
  • Lighting & Composition: Understanding natural light and how to compose your scene for a compelling composition.
  • Notan & Color Theory: Exploring value studies and color schemes to enhance your painting’s impact.
  • Painting Techniques: Mastering underpainting, layering mid and light tones, and applying final touches.

Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to practice these techniques in the picturesque setting of farm fields, pastures, and cabins. Additionally, there will be still life sessions featuring beautiful arrangements of produce and flowers.

Lunch & Learn: Enjoy a delightful lunch provided by Kaluna, including insights, stories, and a deep dive into the history and creative processes of Kaluna’s offerings.

  • Schedule: A detailed schedule will be provided closer to the event, but expect a full day of painting and learning.
  • Supplies: A comprehensive supply list will be shared. While many artists may bring their own set-up, some specific colors or materials might be needed.
  • Weather Contingency: In the event of wet or cold weather, we’ll adapt by working from photos indoors, maintaining the alla prima style.

With a life-long interest in creative expression, Katie started taking art lessons as a child and in high school in Marietta, GA, She has a minor in Art History and concentration in Studio Art from UNC-Chapel Hill. Katie also took classes for five years at Old World Art in Atlanta, as well as plein air and alla prima workshops from artists such as Debra Nadelhoffer and Anne Blair Brown. She has taught art lessons to children and adults for almost 20 years and moved to Ellijay, GA in late 2021. In the North GA mountains that she has loved since she was a child, she leads art classes, events, and workshops, paints the countryside in oil paint, draws charcoal portrait commissions, and makes pottery and mosaic jewelry. Katie finds inspiration for her artwork and lessons while hiking, running, practicing yoga, and exploring the beautiful local mountain landscape. Her goal as an instructor is to encourage her students to experiment with various media, to ignite their own innate creative spark, and to develop the artistic skills necessary to create successful artwork.
